Talking About the Realities of Organizational Culture Isn’t Just Escapistism

fire dive stunt, man jumping on fire

To start out, I’m sorry. I’m sorry for subjecting you to that pun. Forgive me and continue on dear reader.

In the last few days we have had a real time case study of what the result of toxic organizational culture can be. I’m talking about the mass resignation at The Escapist.

For the uninitiated, The Escapist has been a staple organization of geek culture for years. One of their strongest areas were their videos.

Leadership at The Escapist moved their video platform from native hosting to YouTube based videos. However, they established growth growth goals that could not correlate with their growth strategy.

Rather than revamping and accepting responsibility for setting unrealistic and poorly defined goals, leadership took the fact the mark was missed out on high profile staff. There were a series of high profile terminations.

Nick Caldara who was one of the bigger names terminated for not meeting the goals set out by the parent company Gamurs said on X “I was let go for "not achieving goals" that were never properly set out for us, and lack of understanding of our audience and the team that built that audience.”

It was evident that the culture being fostered was one that adhered to the motto "the floggings shall continue until morale improves." The outcome was self-evident; a mass exodus occurred, with all remaining staff in the video department resigning. They were soon joined by a majority of staff writers, and the list of resignations continues to grow.

Could The Escapist have avoided this outcome? Without question.

This is an actively unfolding case study in how culture and communication can make or break an organization.

So how can an organization avoid reaching a cultural event horizon? Listen to your workforce and start changing. Simply put, if nothing changes, nothing changes.

The utilization of a corporate Board Certified Nurse Coach can change everything.

A Board Certified Nurse Coach helps your organization identify pain points and formulate dynamic, goal-focused plans. Engaging a nurse coach ensures that not only are organizational goals addressed, but individuals and the organization are assessed holistically, ensuring that changes support both organizational and individual needs.

When communication evolves with the guidance of a Nurse Coach, it triggers a shift in the culture. This shift leads to a coaching culture where the organization's mission is clear, goals and expectations are effectively communicated, engagement is high, and team members feel valued and supported.

A Nurse Coach can help an organization move in the opposite direction of The Escapist. With an established coaching culture, an organization can attract high levels of talent, increase retention, and position itself for growth.

Learn from the mistakes of others but carve your path to success.
